Cass County among journalism desert
News Map: Telemundo is Nebraska's only professional journalism organization providing news in Spanish
By News Channel NebraskaPLATTSMOUTH - The Nebraska News Map produced by the College of journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln highlights Cass County as the only county in eastern Nebraska without a traditional news organization. Cassgram is an online news source with a printed newsletter. The Plattsmouth Journal, which had absorbed the Nehawka Enterprise, Elmwood Leader, Weeping Water Republican and Louisville Messenger, closed in January of 2023
Cass County is listed among 45 counties with fewer than two full-time local journalists. Using broadcast and the newspaper registry, the news map shows Plattsmouth is among 16 county seats with no local news organization.
The news map report says Nebraska has 565 full-time local journalists working at a local news organization.

In Nebraska, nonprofit newsrooms are stepping up to fill in coverage gaps left by shrinking TV and newspaper newsrooms. Two statewide nonprofit newsrooms, the Nebraska Examiner and Flatwater Free Press are providing free access to their reporting including investigatory reporting and political coverage.
