NEBRASKA CITY - The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says drought conditions remain stable despite below-normal precipitation in January.

Statewide precipitation was .65 inches below normal for January, which is typically the driest month for the state. Conditions were helped by rainfall in November and December that were above normal. Three quarters of Iowa remains abnormally dry or in drought.

The national drought summary says there were recent improvements to northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska, while mountainous regions in the Southwest, Utah and Colorado are abnormally low.

The fire danger forecast shows improving conditions for River Country through the weekend.
