Family says private investigation raises questions over Mayfield death

AUBURN – Family members who say local officials did not do enough to investigate the death of Alex Mayfield have scheduled a 4 p.m. community rally on Feb. 22 at Southside Saloon in Auburn to discuss results of a private investigation.
A Facebook post says private detective Erik Rezabeck told the family that significant items were found in Mayfield’s vehicle after it was released to the family. Those items included a ring that may not have belong to Mayfield and a metal bar the detective described as a possible weapon.
The detective says while Mayfield was dressed in grey sweat shorts and a grey shirt when he was recovered from the river, a gas station photo shows him wearing a black Nebraska T shirt and jean shorts. The detective said a hat Mayfield is seen wearing in the photo was returned to the family in a condition that makes him question if it ever went into the water.

The detective also complained that the sheriff’s office suspected the Jeep was in the river within 48 hours after his disappearance, but did not retrieve it until eight days had passed. He said although the sheriff’s office might have needed time to gather equipment to retrieve the vehicle, a diver could’ve been sent to to recover Alex’s body right away and try to preserve evidence.
The detective said he found human remains, including a pinky bone and parts of a hand.
He said the remains were found in a position that it appeared a hand was grabbing the back seat on the driver’s side and the pinky bone was found embedded in the handle of the back seat driver’s door. The detective questions why the remains were not processed as evidence.
After an autopsy report was finished, the death was ruled accidental or suicide, but a 10 11 news report says the sheriff’s office would re-open the case if there is new evidence.
