Hastings resuming city-wide sewer evaluations
HASTINGS, Neb. – The city of Hastings is beginning the first steps in phase two of surveying its sewer systems for possible maintenance needs.
A news release says the city is working with Johnson Service Company of Kearney to video the city’s entire sewer system and take a proactive approach to sewer maintenance.
The city began this process in 2023 in southwest Hastings, near Brickyard Park.
Around 48,000 feet of sewer line was included in the video inspection, with six locations totaling 1,800 feet of sewer line relined with steam-treated fiberglass pipe.
The second phase, beginning in the coming weeks, will be in west-central Hastings from Marian Road to Burlington Avenue, plus Second St. to Seventh St.
That area covers 51,500 feet of sewer line.
The release says the city's sewer system is divided into 20 subsystems, and one subsystem is scheduled to be addressed each year.
The project prioritizes areas with the oldest sewer lines within the community, some of which are more than 100 years old.
Notifications to residents with nearby sewer lines will be sent out before work begins.
Hastings officials are urging the public's caution while driving to ensure the safety of crews entering and exiting manholes.
