NEBRASKA CITY - The Nebraska City Historical Society announces a new program to recognize community projects that preserve historic places.

Nominations for 2025 Historic Preservation Awards are being accepted through Feb. 7 through mail or e-mail.

Nominees must be located in Nebraska City in categories that include adaptive reuse, compatible new construction, future landmark, historic landscaping, mid-century stewardship, historic preservation, restoration, stewardship and "still working on it."

The Nebraska City Historical Society originated in 1937 and today stewards the Taylor-Wessel-Bickel-Nelson House and the Old Freighters Museum.

The society is also receiving nominations for the president’s award which recognizes decades of support to protecting, preserving and promoting Nebraska City’s history.

Society president Kathy McKillip said the historical society is thrilled to bring awareness and attention to those who have made it their mission to prioritize historic preservation.

An after-hours reception is planned Feb. 28 to present awards.

Nebraska City Historical Society is pleased to honor projects in our community that demonstrate excellence in the preservation of historic places.

Please use this form, editable in Microsoft Word and other compatible programs, to submit your nominations for specific projects. If you intend to submit a nomination for General Support of Historic Preservation, please use the separate form that is provided.

Please read everything carefully before submitting. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Mail all required documentation, to NCHS, P.O. Box 175, Nebraska City, NE 68410.  Hard copy applications must be postmarked by the due date and include phots copies or a flash drive of required photos or a link to a file sharing service where it can download the images.

Submission Deadline: February 07, 2025.  Notification of the Nebraska City Historical Society Preservation awards will be presented on February 28th, 2025.

NOMINATION PROCESS

Nominators may submit their own projects or may nominate others. Please clearly indicate on your nomination form who should be contacted about the award.

Nominated projects should have been completed between January 1, 2022, and January 31, 2025. If you would like the committee to consider an exception to this date range, please email us at [email protected].

Final award decisions: Nominations are reviewed by a committee of local preservation enthusiasts and experts. All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision in February 2025. Notification will be sent to those identified on the nomination form.

ELIGIBILITY

Awards can be given to individuals, organizations, businesses, or public agencies.

Nominees must be located in Nebraska City. For entities outside of Nebraska City and within Otoe County, preference will be shown to areas without a historic preservation organization.

Narrative requirements for specific projects:

For the specific projects category, a project should have been completed between January 1, 2022, and January 31, 2025.

  • A brief description (2,500 words maximum) of the nominated project. The description should include:
    • Approximate year the building was initially constructed and notable background information about the building or its occupants.
    • A clear description of the intention behind the planned work as well as a description of the work actually performed on the building, both exterior and interior.
    • Notable collaborations with individuals and organizations involved in the project (including architects, contractors, or other relevant participants) and the work they performed.
    • Unusual, interesting, or humorous stories relating to the project are strongly encouraged.

High-resolution photo requirements for specific projects:

A minimum of 3 photos that show the project before, during as well as the final outcome. Either attach photos to the email, upload to a file sharing site (e.g., Dropbox) or include a thumb drive depending on how you are submitting the form.

*Note on photos: Before, during and after photos (preferably JPEG or PNG images 300 DPI or better) must be included for the nomination to be considered. The photos should clearly show the work that was performed. Photos are preferred from multiple angles and taken in good lighting to highlight the work that was done. These photos may be shown at the Awards ceremony. You can also submit photo copies of the images but they must be of very good quality.
