Roads are open, but travel not advised in New Year snow storm
SIDNEY, Neb. - Officials are urging caution as a winter storm continues to impact the Nebraska Panhandle, northeast Colorado and southeast Wyoming, with hazardous conditions expected to persist through Sunday morning.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region, predicting snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated pockets receiving up to 6 inches. The advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation warned drivers Saturday of deteriorating road conditions due to extreme cold, icy roads and low visibility. Major roads across the Nebraska Panhandle, northeast Colorado and southeast Wyoming remain open as of late Saturday night.
Blizzard conditions are expected in parts of southeast Nebraska, particularly south of Interstate 80, according to officials.
The winter storm has led to numerous schedule changes across the area:
- Immanuel Lutheran Church Weyerts in Lodgepole is closed Sunday. Pastor Bud will share a message via Facebook at approximately 10:45 a.m.
- New Hope Assembly of God in Kimball, has canceled in-person services on Sunday. An online service will be streamed at 10:30 a.m.
- Paxton United Methodist Church will not hold in-person services Sunday. A livestream will be available at 10:30 a.m. CT.
- Potter-Dix Public Schools have rescheduled Doane Music Festival.
- Spring Creek Church in Mitchell is closed Sunday.
- St. Paul’s Lutheran Church - Potter has canceled its Sunday service. Parishioners are encouraged to attend services at St. Paul in Sidney or Salem in Gurley if weather conditions allow.
The forecast calls for continued snowfall through the night, with temperatures dropping to around 5 degrees and wind chills as low as -5. Up to 4 inches of snow is possible overnight, with lighter snow expected Sunday morning. Highs on Sunday will struggle to reach 21 degrees, with wind chill values between -5 and 5.
