BROWNLEE - The US Geological Survey reports an earthquake Jan. 1 in Nebraska.

A 3.0 magnitude quake is reported near Brownlee, Nebraska. It was among the strongest earthquakes in the USGS shake map.

It is one of 49 earthquakes reported in the past day, but the Nebraska earthquake was among the strongest in the United States on Jan. 1. There was a 3.2 magnitude quake in Oregon.

The Cherry County quake was at Duck Lake near the North Loup River in the Sand Hills south of the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. A USGS map shows the unincorporated communities of Brownlee and Elsmere nearby. Brownlee had 15 occupants in 2010.
