President Biden signs bill naming U.S. Highway 20 nationwide the Medal of Honor Highway
U.S. Highway 20 nationwide is now known as the National Medal of Honor Highway. President Biden signed the bipartisan National Medal of Honor Highway bill, giving the designation to the country’s longest continuous highway. The 3,365-mile highway runs between Newport, Ore. and New England, including through Nebraska.
Nebraska’s stretch of Highway 20 has carried the Medal of Honor designation since 2020, thanks in part to the efforts of Gene Twiford of Laurel, Neb. Twiford played a key role in securing the state designation but did not live to see the national recognition, as he was murdered in 2022.
In Gordon, Neb., local volunteers are leveraging the designation to further honor veterans. News Channel Nebraska has highlighted the growing Veterans Memorial Park, which features hundreds of veterans' names on a memorial wall, sculptures, and military equipment.
