Write-in candidate wins seat on school board
NEBRASKA CITY – The Otoe County Clerk’s Office has certified write-in candidate Patricia Lant to fill in a fifth seat on the Nebraska City School Board.
Lant received 188 votes on Nov. 5 compared to another declared write-in candidate Elizabeth Moore with 155 votes. There were a total of 506 write-in votes, including 10 in Cass County.
There were five seats open and only four candidates on the ballot.
Lant is an accredited U.S. Department of Justice representative currently working a the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement. She earned her journalism degree at Bowling Green State University, is a graduate of the Nebraska City Leadership Class No. 15 and has been active with the Friends of the Riverview Nature Park and Better Together Collaborative.
Also elected to the school board are John Hodges, 2,536; Lisa Chaney, 2,528; Jim Nemec, 2,274; and Sally Schreiner, 2,240.
Retiring board members are Don Loseke, four years; Nick Schmitz, eight years; and Jeff Frields, 11 years.

For Southeast Community College, Kathy Boellstorff of Johnson was uncontested and was elected with 67 percent of the vote.
Retired attorney Neal Stenberg was re-elected for an at-large seat with 65 percent of the vote.
For re-election to the Lower Platte South NRD, Otoe County favored Seth Hawkins of Plattsmouth. Hawkins, who earned his law degree from UN-L, worked as a deputy Otoe County Attorney in 2021. He defeated Alexander Dierks 68 votes to 40.
For Nemaha NRD subdistrict 2, Todd Boellstorff was re-lected with 61 percent of the vote. For subdistrict 3, Orval Gigstad received 82 percent of the vote. For subdistrict 4, Patty Coates was elected with 73 percent of the vote and Dan Hodges was elected with 73 percent. Randall Fox received 75 percent of the vote in subdistrict 5.
For mayor of Nebraska City, Bryan Bequette won re-elected to third term with 65 percent of the vote. Timothy Morgan has 19 percent of the vote.
