White reportedly leaving Nebraska for ACC job
Tony White may have called his last 3-3-5 formation in Lincoln.
The Nebraska associate head coach and defensive coordinator may be taking a similar position at Florida State University, according to multiple reports.
Last December, White was courted by several programs and he eventually chose to stay with the Cornhuskers. The increased salary to $1.6 million per year and a senior-laden class may have been factors in helping him decide to return for 2024.
A two-time Broyles Award (2022, '23) nominee, given to the nation’s top assistant coach, White had the Blackshirts ranked No. 19 in the NCAA by giving up 315.4 yards per game. They were ranked eighth in the Big Ten. The scoring defense ranked 20th nationally by giving up 19.8 points per game.
White's 11 ranked in the middle of the pack when it came to forcing turnovers. The 16 recorded this season was good for a tie for No. 67 in the FBS.
Among the reports, White is being joined in Tallahassee, Fla. by defensive line coach Terrance Knighton.
Knighton had two impressive seniors leading the way up front in Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher. The duo helped the 'Skers to be disruptive in the backfield with sacks (2.25/game, T-50th in FBS) and tackles for loss (6.2, 43rd). The top four defensive lineman combined for 15 of the 27 sacks the Blackshirts had this season.
Both coaches spent two seasons at Nebraska when head coach Matt Rhule took over the program.
