NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City police suspect a pair from Baco Raton, Fla., of a role in using a wireless connection to steal from an automated teller machine.

Jhonelier Tovar-Duran, 27, and Elias Augusto Vargas, 30, are charged with conspiracy on Oct. 6.

An arrest affidavit says an ATM customer called police at 4:39 p.m. on a Wednesday to report that a man wearing a black mask had placed an electronic device on top of an ATM at Arbor Bank and walked into a nearby parking lot.

Police detained Duran in the parking lot and Vargas, who was identified by a Columbian passport, near the grounds of the Nebraska City Middle School. Vargas had a mask and was wearing a wig.

Bank officials say the Onn keyboard, which is similar to wireless equipment used in remote controls for television and is available at Walmart, was linked to the ATM and had control of the display screen. Police say the screen could be manipulated by the keyboard.

Police suspect the device had been linked to the ATM for about an hour. A bank audit shows $19,000 missing from the ATM, but arrest affidavits do not say how much money has been recovered. Police say theft from the ATM is still under investigation.

A conspiracy complaint filed with the court alleges that Duran and Vargas were lookouts and alleges two unknown defendants took more than $19,000 in cash.
