Mayor Bequette carries on deep sense of gratitude for veterans

Bequette says his life was enriched by his military career and he is grateful for those who take the oath to serve

NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City Mayor Bryan Bequette, a helicopter pilot who attained the rank of colonel in his 26 years with the U.S. Army, spoke at the Veterans Day observance at Nebraska City High School Monday.

Bequette: “I appreciated the gratitude that I hear when people find out that I’m a veteran and they say ‘thank you for your service.’ I do enjoy hearing that and I hope people don’t think I’m being flippant or just saying something off the cuff, but I usually responds with you’re welcome, it was my pleasure.”

He talked about furthering his education, visiting other places in the country and around the world and how amazing it was to learn to fly a helicopter. He said he is grateful for  meeting his wife Kelly and joining the brotherhood of veterans.

Bequette: “Because you’re joining a fellowship of those that fought to establish our country, those that have fought and served to preserve our country and that fellowship will be added to by those hopefully come forward for centuries to come.”

 

He said serving in the military means sacrifices, whether it’s time away from loved ones or living under the code of military justice.

Bequette: “In the back of your mind, while you’re wearing that uniform, you always know that your job is to be part of the military, part of the United States military that protects our national interests, and you know that may mean unfortunately some day having to go to combat. Unfortunately combat can involving risking serious injury or even death. We recognize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in May when we have Memorial Day.

“There are perks and there are sacrifices and I’ve got to tell you it is always very heart warming to feel the gratitude of those who recognize that, when they tell me, ‘thank you for your service.’

Bequette said he expects to add to his response that he is grateful for those who are still willing to take an oath and support the country.

Bequette: “On behalf of the city, thank you for your service and also, I’m grateful for your sacrifice and I pray that God continues to richly bless you are your families and I hope that everybody joins me each day in praying that God will protect those serving right now and I ask that God continues to bless this great country and Nebraska City.”

Student Council President Lextyn Harker gave the welcome. The Nebraska City Concert Band is directed by Sgt. Emily Jones.
