AUBURN - Brownville voters recalled two board members and elected elected two others.

For the Village of Brownville, the top two voter getters were Kim Johnson, 78, and Paul Fish, 53. Incumbent Carol Furnas received 27 votes, including 25 in early balloting.

For the recall of Brownville board chairman Marty Hayes, the vote was 71 in favor and 26 against.

For the recall of board member Colleen Volkmer, the vote was 72 in favor and 24 against.

In 2023, Brownville residents voted to recall two members, Natisha Winkelman and Terry Vice and a third resigned.

Board member Jamie Smith had been previously appointed and Board Chairman Martin Hayes appointed Carol Furnas to replace the resigning Bailey Bindle. Hayes appointed Kim Johnson and Colleen Volkmer to replace the recalled Winkelman and Vice.

A new recall effort was launched in August against Hayes, who has been on the board for 47 years, and vice chairman Volkmer, who has been on the board less than a year.

Fish, is Hayes’ brother-in-law and a former board member. He is currently suing the village alleging that there was not proper notification of a meeting where an expenditure for a village office was approved.



 

Auburn School Board (vote 3)

Top vote getters in Nemaha county for Auburn School board were Eli Davidson, 1,521; Grant Brueggemann, 1,465, and Janny Crotty, 1,444.

Johnson fire hall bonds

The Johnson Fire Station bond question was 111 for and 77 against.

The Village of Johnson is asking voters for authority to for $950,000 in bonds for a 4,000-square-foot addition to the fire station.

Auburn Third Ward

Nemaha County voters re-elected Bryan Mellage to the county board and Tom Clark and Rick Janssen to the Auburn City Council.

In Ward 3, Johnny Curtright was elected with 299 votes, compared to 197 for Seth Bingham.

Incumbent Jeff Jeanneret served 12 years on the council but is not seeking re-election. He listed updating fire equipment and vehicles among council accomplishments during his term.
