City commissioners approve grant for Knights Care
Economic developer says school program helps fill child care gap
NEBRASKA CITY – City commissioners approved a growth fund grant of $25,000 for a child care program offered by Lourdes Central Catholic.
Economic Developer Dan Mauk said the city approved day care as a use for growth funds in 2019. He said the grant will assist Lourdes Central Catholic Knights Care maintain child care services at a location that had previously closed, as well as offer afterschool programs for children beginning at three years old.
Mauk said the Nebraska City AREA EDC has been working to improve the child care gap in Nebraska City and the county. He said there is still a way to go but the Knights Care program addresses some of the need.
Jim Kuhn of the Citizens Advisory Council said he is very much in favor of the grant calling the child care program a perfect opportunity at a perfect location.

School administrator Fr. Jonathan Haschke said the grant application is for improvements and maintenance of the newly purchased house near the school. The Knights Care program currently has two staff members and 24 children enrolled during the school year.
Mauk expects there to be $600,000 available in the growth fund once sales tax receipts are received in October.
