NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City commissioners approved replacement of some street lights in communities served by Nebraska City Utilities.

The utility reports a state grant of $100,000 leaving the city’s share at $37,000.

The utility plans to replace 137 sodium vapor lamps with LED lights to main streets and main entrances of nine communities including Bennett, Douglas, Palmyra, Unadilla, Otoe, Lorton, Julian, Brock and Dunbar.

Nebraska City Utilities owns 2,350 lights. About 500 have already been changed out in Nebraska City.

In other action, Commissioner of Public Safety Bryan Bequette proclaimed Oct. 6-12 as Public Power and Public Natural Gas Week.

Bequette said Nebraska City Utilities has worked to bring lower-cost, safe, reliable electricity and natural gas to the community since 1941.

He said public utilities ensure the best service possible at not-for-profit rates.
