Livery Stable Grand Opening hosted by Johnson County Museum
The Johnson County Historical Society proudly hosted a grand opening of its Livery Stable with a Saturday evening gala on September 28.
“The museum had made several attempts to acquire the 1907 livery stable. Finally in April 2022 it succeeded. The purchase included an “as is” clause. That’s when the work began,” stated Sarah Williamson, president of the historical society.
The stable had housed many businesses with the most recent being a warehouse for various materials, mostly military surplus items. The structure had deteriorated and required a complete remodel.
The first order of business was to remove all the stored material. More than 14 loaded dumpsters and multiple loads of iron and steel were moved before an assessment of the structure could be conducted.
The assessment determined that necessary improvements included replacement of the roof and gutters, replacement of all doors and windows, tuck pointing all brick and refurbishing the east wall. All new interior support columns were required. Perimeter fencing was installed including the refurbished decorative gate from the Tecumseh Cemetery. Electricity and lighting were the final touches.
Livery stable displays include three authentic horse stalls, a tack room and a feed room. Agriculture equipment from the period is displayed throughout. Museum hours are 10-2 Tuesday through Saturday.
“This two- and half-year project was a labor of love and a test of patience for all our board members and volunteers. Knowing now what we didn’t know then, would we do it again? Absolutely!
It was wonderful to receive the kind compliments and show of appreciation from all who attended the grand opening. Thank you, Johnson County residents and friends, for your support,” concluded Williamson.
