AUBURN – Auburn firefighters extinguished a fire in an attached garage at G Street and Central Avenue Thursday and prevented the fire from spreading to the main house.

Firefighters arrived around 3:22 p.m. to see flames. Fire Chief Darwin McCollum said search and rescue was ordered to make sure no one was in the house.

McCollum: “Dispatchers didn’t know at the time that it was vacant. We did a search and rescue and it is vacant.”

He said firefighters conducted an interior attack to save the house portion of the structure, which is currently being remodeled.

Fire hose crossed Highway 136 to a fire hydrant and the highway traffic was diverted.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate the cause of the fire.
