Syracuse considers grant for storefront, approves RV garages

Playground committee reports $262,000 raised

SYRACUSE - An ordinance to increase the wall size of outbuildings was changed at Wednesday’s Syracuse City Council meeting from 10 feet to 14 feet for properties in the R1 district. Resident Chad Loecker did his homework and presented a strong case on allowing taller sidewalls on outbuildings to accommodate RVs to be stored inside and not on driveways or streets.  Along with the use of metal siding.

Justin Hampton of 912 Mohawk St. was granted a conditional use permit for an outbuilding in his back yard.

An agreement was signed with Hydro Optimization and Automation Solutions to approve HOA Cyber Protection and maintenance agreement for the city water well.

City Administrator Jessica Meyer and Parks Department head Sonni Graves worked diligently to help the Project Playground Committee.   The committee along with so many supporters raised $262,000, which was enough to submit for a matching grant.

The committee wanted to also give a shout out to Councilmen Halvorsen, Patton, GIgstad, Werner, Mayor Dettmer, Kelly Farmer, Julie Slafter for their continual support.

The Germanfest Committee presented several items to the council which all met with their approval.  There can be carry-in and consumption during the Germanfest volleyball tournament at the sports complex on October 18th.  A map was provided for street closures for the parade, an SDL for Tim Collins of the Beer Stein to have a beer garden on 5th Street.   Anthony Hensley of B & J's was also granted permission to set up a beer garden on 5th Street.

The Germanfest pickleball tournament will be held October 20th beginning at 11 a.m.

The car show for Germanfest will be held October 20th on 5th Street from Plum to Thorne streets.

 Tim and Carly Antes submitted the final draft of their Do it Best makeover. The downtown revitalization grant that the Antes have put in a request for will make it feasible to accomplish this makeover. 

Librarian Melissa Juilfs reported things have slowed down with school now in session. In October the library will be offering Make It Monday classes, Kids ages 6-18 can create things from old T-shirts and jeans, the classes are from 3:30 to 5 p.m. There will be a cost of $10 for four classes. Registration is required. 

Storytime starts this month. Children ages 3-6 are invited to join us for storytelling, songs, games, and crafts on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Beginning Sept. 25th until April 23.   December's storytelling will be Dec. 18.

Tammy Ingerson of Bloomhaven spoke with the mayor and council regarding parking on and around 5th Street for the weekend of October 18th - 20th during Germanfest. She will be entertaining approximately 14 ladies for a quilting retreat and was concerned about parking.  The council said they would try to come up with a solution for her retreat participants to park nearby.
