Woman injured trying to run across Highway 2
NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City Fire and Rescue responded to a pedestrian accident near the Nebraska City exit of westbound Highway 2 Wednesday afternoon.
An ambulance transported a woman believed to be of Guatemalan descent from the scene. She was taken to a trauma center in Lincoln but has not yet been identified.
Otoe County Sheriff Colin Caudill said the woman had crossed the two eastbound lanes of Highway 2 and was attempting to run across the two westbound lanes into the path of a truck pulling a flatbed semi-trailer.
Caudill said the truck driver took evasive action in an attempt to avoid the woman, but she was hit by the trailer. In an attempt to avoid the pedestrian, the truck veered off of the road a few yards from the overpass bridge and descended down an embankment to the Nebraska City exit ramp.
Sheriff Caudill said the driver’s actions contributed to the survivability of the pedestrian. He said investigators have received reports of other people attempting to cross the highway at that location, although it would be much safer to cross beneath the Highway 75 overpass.
