GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A nonprofit organization in Central Nebraska is partnering with a developer to build houses for refugees and new immigrants.

The Center for Rural Affairs and Hoppe Development are working together to construct two five-plex buildings. The 10 apartments will have either three or four bedrooms each.

Center of Rural Affairs development director Nick Bergin said the housing is needed.

“Truly excited to be able to help with housing construction in Grand Island, I know Grand Island is a community that needs more affordable housing,“ said Bergin.

The Multicultural Coalition in Grand Island will be referring qualified tenants. Construction costs total around $2.36 million.

The Center for Rural Affairs received a $1 million Pandemic Housing Relief Program grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. They will provide the loans to Hoppe Development for the construction.
