NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City fifth graders are invited to the Otoe County courthouse on May 2 for the return of National Law Day to the county.

Retired District Judge Randall Rehmeier and Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Funke are coordinators for the project, where students meet with lawyers, judges and others involved in the legal system.

Rehmeier said students and their teachers will discuss legal careers and the 2024 theme of Civil: Education to Engage.

President Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day in 1958. It was active in Otoe County in 1966, when organizers said it would increase the public’s understanding of the law’s place in American life. It was last observed here in 2013, when judges Rehmeier and Funke were active in Otoe County.

Since the statewide program began in 2002, more than 4,000 fifth graders have participated in the event.

This year’s national theme is Voices of Democracy.
