LINCOLN – Nebraska’s largest cities are celebrating Arbor Day 2024.

The Omaha Public Power District is planning a booth at Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha and the Arbor Day Foundation is hosting the second Arbor Day LNK in Lincoln.

Arbor Day LNK is scheduled 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Antelope Park.

Dan Lambe of the foundation said 150 trees will be given away and trees of various species and size will be available at Lincoln’s largest celebration of trees.

 

Lambe: “We work year-round to unlock the power of trees all over the world, but there’s always something special about seeing that mission unfold right here in Lincoln.”

Support from Lincoln Electric Systems, Olsson Family Foundation and other local sponsors will also support a tree planting in a Lincoln park.

OMAHA  - The Omaha Public Power District is joining Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha Tuesday for a TREEmendous Arbor Day celebration, which was born in Nebraska City in 1872.

OPPD will provide educational material about how trees can help reduce energy usage for about 2,000 elementary students. Children will  make pinecone bird feeders and plant a tree. For the program from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

At 11:30 a.m., OPPD foresters will enlists students from Fort Calhoun Elementary School to plant an American yellowwood tree in the festival garden.

 Arbor Day is observed nationally on the last Friday of April.

Lincoln – On Thursday, April 25 at 1:30 p.m., the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will plant trees at the Lincoln Regional Center (LRC) to memorialize and honor past teammates and community leaders who contributed to mental health treatment.

The campus at LRC is home to approximately 600 species of trees, totalling more than 1,100 trees. This year, eight new trees will be planted to honor a combined 200-plus years of service by former employees. Each year, families of former LRC employees have the opportunity to plant a tree in memory of their loved one.
