SYRACUSE -  Syracuse firefighters extinguished an active fire at a Locust street residence early Easter morning.

Flames were visible from two windows as firefighters arrived shortly after 1 a.m.. Three occupants of the house had safely evacuated. Syracuse Rescue took them to Syracuse Area Health and at least one woman was transported to a Lincoln hospital.

 

Veterinarian Orville Gigstad responded and took two cats to the clinic. Two dogs were taken by a relative.

Fire Chief Keith McWilliams said an interior attack was used after the flames were knocked down from the outside. He said the state Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to investigate the cause of the fire.

Owner Peggy Neemann called the house, which was built in 1884, a total loss. She said the family had rented there for about five years.

Unadilla firefighters also responded.
