ROBERT “BOB” WAYNE SMITH, 94, rural Randolph, Iowa, died while working on his farm, on Monday, March 4, 2024.  Robert, the son of Jesse Charles “JC” Smith and Dolores Marie (Lewis) Smith, was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1929, in Imogene, Iowa.

Robert married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Wilson, on August 6, 1951, sharing over 72 years of loving devotion to each other.  He then immediately left for the Korean War, receiving a Purple Heart for wounds on the battlefield.  Raising a family of four and working the farm filled his life.  He was one of the founding members of the Tabor Rural Fire Department with his father and brother, Carl.  His love for Iowa farmland was evident when he, along with three others, started the Golden Hills RC&D, a devoted member for over 30 years.  Robert served on many different agricultural committees and was named Iowa Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1999.  Additionally, he was “Iowan of the Day” at the Iowa State Fair.

His hobbies included water skiing, building and riding motorcycles, flying his plane, building his own home, operating the bull dozer, reading, and playing the harmonica.  His favorite way to spend time was “playing in the dirt” with his excavator.

Preceding Robert in death were his parents; brothers, Carl and Kermit Smith, and his sister, Vivian Walker.  Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bonnie (Wilson) Smith; and their four children, Susan LaFollette of Tabor, IA, Lynn Mauer and husband, Paul of Morton, IL, Kathryn Talley-Timmer and husband, Doug of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Brett Smith and wife, Marsha of Tabor, IA; two grandsons, Jason LaFollette and wife, Jennifer of Reston, VA, Wesley LaFollette and wife, Carola of Friedeburg, Germany; three great grandchildren, Jacob, Ethan, and Lucy LaFollette; brother, Ernest Smith of rural Randolph, IA; sister-in-law, Charlotte Wilson of Randolph, IA; along with many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, March 11, 2024 at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Tabor, IA, with  Pastor Rick Slyster officiating.  Visitations with the family greeting friends will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA. Interment will be at the Randolph IA cemetery. Memorials will go to Golden Hills R C & D, Oakland, IA, or Randolph Volunteer Fire Department, OR the Tabor Volunteer Fire Association.
