NEBRASKA CITY - The spring migration of snow geese is getting an early start.

The Nebraska Birding Guide says the spring migration typically starts in Nebraska in mid-February, but over 400,000 migratory birds were spotted over the past week at the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City, Mo.

Ducks Unlimited reports drought conditions is impacting some areas where the geese typically overwinter.

The refuge in the Missouri River flyway says the ice is thawing so there is plenty of water for early spring migrants.

Nebraska visitors guide say the peak of the migratory season in Nebraska is still in March.
