PLATTSMOUTH – Voters in the Plattsmouth school district voted to recall school board member Terri Cunningham-Swanson in a special election on Tuesday.

The recall passed with 1,649 votes in favor and 1,000 against. There was a 38 percent voter turnout.

The recall election was scheduled after a petition with 859 signatures was accepted in November.  It was the second recall effort as an earlier petition drive fell short of the signatures needed.

Petition circulators claimed Terri Cunningham-Swanson is a member of extremists groups and has a record of being anti-public education. Petition forms say her proposed ban on books goes against the Constitution's First Amendment. It also claims potential legal fees.

In a statement of defense submitted to the elections office, Cunningham-Swanson said exposure to sexually explicit media in early adolescence has a substantive relationship with risky sexual behavior. She cited a 2013 study on the effects of reading on the brain and said reading of sensual scenes will more intensely trigger sexual desires.

Both sides built websites on the issue.
