Fireworks ignite boxes, debris
NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City firefighters responded to a call one second into 2024.
The call came in at Sixth Street and Third Corso were fireworks that were used to celebrate the new year ignited boxes and some debris.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and were back at the station 15 minutes later. Two units and 17 firefighters responded.
A 2010 Nebraska law authorizes cities to allow fireworks leading up to the new year. Nebraska City approved fireworks in 2012 after former Fire Chief Alan Viox suggested the city study the impact of winter weather and firework hazards.
Wild Willy’s is the only vendor to get a permit with the city this year.
Over the weekend, firefighters also responded to Morton Place Dec. 29 after a pull station was pulled.
On Thursday, Dec. 28, 16 firefighters responded to lot 1 at 1701 First Corso for burnt food in a microwave.
Firefighters removed the microwave and used a fan to ventilate the residence.
