Rodney R. Powell, 76 of Syracuse, was born on March 25, 1947, to David and Lois (Grubaugh) in David City. He passed away on December 23, 2023, at The Grace Space in Lincoln. Rod attended UNL and graduated in 1969 with a degree in chemistry and teaching, later acquiring a master’s degree. On June 21, 1969, he married Anna Mae Fricke at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in David City. That same year, he began his career in education in Ord, NE and joined the Army Reserves.

He later taught at Scribner, NE before taking his final teaching job in 1974 and taught high school math and science in Syracuse, NE. Rod retired from teaching at Syracuse Public Schools after totaling 35+ years. Rod was a beloved coach, working with kids in football, track and wrestling. On June 9, 2012, he was honored for his coaching career when he was inducted into the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Rod enjoyed golfing and fishing and tinkering with his Harley Davidson Topper.

He is survived by his sons Joshua (Angie) Powell of Lincoln, Grant (Jennifer) Powell of Gretna; grandchildren Oscar & Hattie Powell, Maxwell & Lillian Powell; siblings Douglas Powell of Denton, Jeffrey (Rita) Powell of Warsaw, IN; also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Anna Mae, daughter Jane Catherine, sister-in-law Jeannette Powell.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 6th from 1pm-3pm at the Kimmel Building in Syracuse. We ask you to gather with his family and celebrate his life by sharing your favorite memories of Rod.

Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in David City on January 7th at 11am.

Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
