Former public defender enters plea in identity theft case
PLATTSMOUTH – A former alternate public defender in Cass County has entered a no contest plea to misdemeanor identity theft and deception in March of 2020.
James Owen, 34, of LaVista is set for sentencing on Jan. 16.
Prosecutors say the Johnson County Attorney’s Office requested an investigation after a court clerk reported an inconsistent font in an e-file stamp used for the judge’s signature in a child custody case.
The Nebraska Supreme Court Council of Discipline was involved in the case against Owen, who formerly had a private law practice in Plattsmouth. His law license had been suspended for six months.
