PERU, NE - The Peru State volleyball team defeated the Culver-Stockton Wildcats in five sets Saturday morning. The Bobcats improve to 7-12 overall and 2-5 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Wildcats fall to 3-15 overall and 0-8 in Heart play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how the five-set match went…
 
It was tight early in the first set as the game was tied at 6-all after a kill from Erison Vonderschmidt (Falls City). The Bobcats then went on a 5-1 run to take an 11-7 lead after a kill from Allie Schneider (Humphrey), an ace from Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.), a block assist from Allie Schneider and Elli Williams (Olathe, Kan.) and a kill from Keiley Hein (Omaha).
 
Culver-Stockton would then go on a 5-1 run of its own as they tied the set at 12 apiece. Peru State got its lead back out to three up 16-13 after a kill from Kalyssa Fox (Casa Grande, Ariz.) and an error from the Wildcats.
 
Peru State had a lead late in the first set up 19-15 after a service ace from Alyssa Bock (Plattsmouth). Culver-Stockton then went on an 8-4 run to get the set within one trailing 23-22.
 
The Bobcats had set point after a kill from Fox but the Wildcats tied the set at 24-all. Peru State then had another set point after a kill from Vonderschmidt up 25-24. Culver-Stockton scored the final three points in the set to win the first set 27-25.
 
The second set was close in the beginning as the Wildcats and Bobcats were tied 9-all. Then a 5-0 run had the Bobcats extended their lead out to 14-9 after kills from Hein and Allie Schneider along with an ace from Paniagua.
 
Peru State then extended its lead in the second out to eight up 19-11 after a kill from Hein. Culver-Stockton then went on a 6-2 run trailing by four down 21-17. The Bobcats then did not let the Wildcats score another point in the set as they won the set with a kill and an ace from Vonderschmidt as well as kills from Allie and Addison Schneider (Humphrey) as the Bobcats won set two 25-17 tying the match at 1-1.
 
Culver-Stockton started out the third set hot up 8-3, then Peru State came storming back with a 8-3 run of its own to take an 11-10 lead after a kill from Williams. The Bobcats extended their lead out to three after a setting error up 16-13.
 
Peru State was up late in the third set after an attacking error from Culver-Stockton as the lead was now four up 21-17. The Wildcats then went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 21-all.
 
The Bobcats then finished the set on a 4-1 run as a kill from Vonderschmidt helped the Bobcats to a 25-22 set three victory.  Culver-Stockton started the fourth set up 10-1. The Wildcats were then up 15-3 before the Bobcats woke up in the fourth set scoring the next four points thanks to a kill from Vonderschmidt and three attacking errors. Culver-Stockton ended the fourth set on a 10-3 run winning set four 25-10 and tying the match at 2-2.
 
The fifth set was tight as the game was tied eight-all after a kill from Fox. The Wildcats and the Bobcats would go back-and-forth until the score was settled on 13-13. Kills from Shealie Wiebers (Papillion) and Allie Schneider won the Bobcats the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
 
Vonderschmidt led the way in kills with 16, Fox finished with 10 and Williams had nine. Hein and Vonderschmidt led the way in aces with three apiece and Paniagua finished with two.
 
Addison Schneider finished with a team-high three blocks while Allie Schneider and Williams each had two. Allie Schneider had a team-high 44 assists. Vonderschmidt finished with 23 digs while Paniagua and Bock finished behind her with 22 and 21 respectively.
 
Peru State hits the road this Tuesday, October 3, for a match with William Penn. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
