Othmer earns top horseman in Johnson County
TECUMSEH - Levi Othmer, 15, of Tecumseh was the champion senior horseman at the Johnson County Fair’s 4-H horse show on Sunday.
He rode Ace in speed events winning the flag race with a time of 10.7 seconds over competitor Sunnie Rother’s time of 11.7. Rother won the single pole race, followed by Cara Pierce.
Champion intermediate showman Bo Speckmann-McCoy won the flag race in his division with a time of 11.4. He won the single pole race with a time of 8.3.
Eleanor Burgett won the junior single pole race with a time of 11.03.
Riley Speckmann-McCoy was the champion junior horseman.
Othmer said the hot weather created some challenges and some question as to how the horses would react.
He rode Six in the trail event, which was moved to a shaded area on the fairgrounds.
Othmer: “I love horses. I live on a farm and we uses for cattle.”
When asked if a calf was loose would choose an ATV or a horse to round it up, he answered horse.
Othmer: “If it was really gone, if it’s in the ditch and it’s hard to get to, horses, yeah.”
