Stubbendick shows champion steer
SYRACUSE – Cattle judge Chase Devries called the Otoe County 4-H beef show Friday ultra competitive in terms of quality and its 34 showmanship entrants.
Maddox Stubbendick of Syracuse showed the champion 4-H market steer and the fair’s supreme beef.
His crossbred steer was raised on his family’s farm near Syracuse and was picked by Stubbendick for its potential.
His first championship came on a hot day on the fairgrounds. Stubbendick said the cattle wore out fast under the heat.
Stubbendick: “I feel like I’ve worked very hard on my calf this year compared to other years.”
Izabel Stubbendick, the 14-year-old daughter of Kelsey and Mitch Stubbendick of Syracuse, showed the champion 4-H heifer, which was entered in the bred and raised category.
Stubbendick: “She was born on the farm last year on Feb. 22 and we kept her ever since because we thought she looked really good.”
The crossbred calf was shown at the fair last year as a stocker feeder and caught the judge’s eye this year.
Stubbendick: “She was able to walk really good and she set up on her own. She wasn’t acting difficult that much.”
She said it was special to win at the Otoe County Fair with a calf born on her place.
Stubbendick: “You build that bond with them and then you get to keep them and then you can continue that.”
She will keep the cow to have calves that might be shown at a future fair. Izabel also showed the champion feeder calf.
Kadyn Sisco was the top senior showman and Will Janssen was reserve.
