TECUMSEH – A bond issue for new school construction in Tecumseh failed in a vote on Tuesday.

There were 692 votes in favor and 798 votes against in the Johnson County Central School District.

The school district proposed a $49 million bond to acquire land and construct a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school.

The plan included a competition gymnasium, career and technical education shops, wrestling practice room, district business offices in 123,940 square feet.

The school says although there are cost savings in the 2023 plan, it is still $5 million higher than proposed in 2022 because of rising interest rates and costs of construction.

Here is the county-by-county vote total

Johnson County

yes, 636, no 537

Otoe County

yes 52, no 236

Nemaha County

yes 0, no 8
