Health alert issued for lake in Richardson County

HUMBOLDT, Neb. -- A health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) was issued for Kirkman’s Cove Lake in Richardson County.
The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy said HAB, also known as toxic blue-green algae, was found in samples that were taken earlier this week from Kirkman’s Cove Lake.
Officials said signs will be posted to warn the public to use caution and that designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert.
Fishing and recreational boating will be allowed but officials advise people to again use caution and avoid exposure to the water, specifically to avoid anything that could lead to swallowing the water.
Pets shouldn't be let in the water or drink from the lake. The public areas are still usable to the public for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities.
