LINCOLN – In her latest legislative column, State Sen. Julie Slama outlines legislative efforts to provide property tax relief, but says hikes in property valuations could negate the progress.

She places the responsibility for the valuation increases on local county assessors.

She says the state Legislature provides for refundable income tax credits for people who pay school district property taxes and the Property Tax Incentive Act that includes taxes paid to community colleges.

She said the tax credits cut the total tax bills up to 28 percent, but will be meaningless if valuation increases lead to spending increases by local government that exceed the tax credit benefits.
