FALLS CITY - The Falls City Volunteer Fire Department issued a public notice regarding “out of service” designation on fire hydrants.

The city recently flushed 214 hydrants to remove sediment and determine flow rates.

The fire department paints the tops of hydrants to correspond with flow rates per minute.

  • Black: 0-300 gallons
  • Red: 300 – 500 gallons
  • Orange: 500 to 750 gallons
  • Yellow: 750-1000 gallons
  • Green: 1,000 gallons plus

By observing the color of the fire hydrant’s top, firefighters can assess if the hydrant has the pumping  capacity of a fire truck or if it would be preferable to use the truck’s booster tank instead.

Any hydrants that are out of service will be assessed and repaired by the city.
