OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha man was sentenced on Wednesday for having explosive materials.

U.S. Attorney Steven Russell said 24-year-old Kalem Barber, of Omaha, was sentenced in federal court in Omaha on Wednesday. He was convicted for the unlawful storage of explosive materials. Barber was given two years of probation, 50 hours of community service and has to pay a $500 fine. There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents, On November 26, 2021, Douglas County Sherriff’s Deputies were sent to a construction site in Omaha for an explosion of a porta potty. Multiple juveniles were there and immediately ran from the area after the explosion.

Officials said they got information that resulted in a Dec. 2, 2021, FBI search warrant of an Omaha home where Barber had been living. The FBI found explosive materials that had approximately 20 lbs. of flash powder in an unsecured box-styled container. Barber was using the explosive materials to make homemade fireworks.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
