Gbur hits walkoff homer in Creighton win over Omaha
Ben Gbur homered in the seventh inning to tie it, then blasted a walkoff homer in the ninth to win it as Creighton Baseball posted a 4-2 win over Omaha in front of a season-high 7,398 fans on Cox Kids Day at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Gbur entered the day with two homers in 37 games before producing season-highs with four RBI and three hits, including Creighton's first walkoff homer since Michael Emodi vs. Wichita State in 2018, and just the third in the 13-year history of all games played at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
The teams combined to use 11 pitchers on the day, including seven on the Bluejay side.
After four scoreless innings, Omaha dented the scoreboard first when Devin Hurdle hit a two-run homer into the left field bullpen to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
The Bluejays answered against reliever Jackson Gordon in the seventh inning as Gbur launched his third homer of the year to plate Jack Grace and knot the score at 2-all.
Omaha threatened in the ninth inning with the heart of the order as Mike Boeve and Hurdle collected back-to-back singles against Cade Lommel before Daniel Hammond slammed the door by inducing an inning-ending double play off the bat of Brennen Bales. Hammond improved to 2-2 with the victory.
CU's ninth inning rally featured a one-out walk to Colby Canales, who then motored to third base on Ben North's sacrifice bunt for the second out. Gbur ended the game with a 401-foot rocket over the bullpen in left, his second dinger of the game and fourth of the season.
Luke Gainer (1-3) suffered the loss after throwing the ninth inning. Mavericks starter Alex Potter threw five scoreless frames but did not factor in the decision. Boeve led UNO with three hits to lift his season average to .401.
Creighton closes the regular-season this weekend with a home series against No. 9 Connecticut, beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a game that will be nationally televised by FS1.
