NEBRASKA CITY - The Disc Gauntlet 2023 tour features the Arbor Day Open on Sunday, April 30, and some competition at the highest level of the sport.

The slate for the second Arbor Day Open is full at 45 competitors, five starting at each of the nine holes of the course at 9:30 a.m.

Mitch Chapin of the Nebraska City Disc Golf Association said he expects both pros and novices to well-navigate the course’s trees, slopes and pond.

The first Arbor Day Open was held about a month after the course opened at Wildwood Park with amateur  and a few advanced throwers, but Chapin expects higher-level competitors on Sunday.

Round two is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

The nine-hole Wildwood Disc Golf Course, which is Pro Disc Golf Association sanctioned, was started by Chapin  and Keyes Nelson with the encouragement of Parks Commissioner Patrick Wehling.

The city allocated keno funds for nine, yellow Latitude 64 baskets. Public donations provided $7,000 for concrete and benches.

Chapin, a 2002 graduate of Nebraska City High School and teacher, said the course has been used by high school PE classes and disc golf added to the PE curriculum. Disc golfers donated 120 discs for the school’s use.

The Disc Gauntlet tour also features the Siege at Stanton Lake in Falls City on June 10.
