Rhule: Johnson playing 'loud'

LINCOLN - Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule commented on recruiting and the second week of practice on Tuesday, where players running back Rahmir Johnson, offensive lineman Turner Corcoran and quarterback Jeff Simms.
Rhule said the focus of Nebraska recruiting is on the program, rather than saying what a young player might want to hear.
Rhule: “Very simply talk about our program, how we’re going to do things, what we’re built upon on and also our vision for each person and what it will be like when they are here. It’s very transparent. It’s not for everybody, but I think a lot of guys will find that they will want to come to a place like this, come to Nebraska.”
Coach Rhule said Rahmir Johnson had a 60-yard run in practice and has led by example, mentioning a Carolina Panthers draft pick.
Rhule: “Christian McCaffrey used to say to me, he wished, you know, the best players play loud. Rahmir, so far, is playing loud. Excellent outside zone runner, but running with power, picks up blitzes, can run all of our … our halfback passing game is … there are a lot option routes, a lot of things that require some depth and he’s picking it up real well.”
Johnson was one of the top running backs in Nebraska in 2021, but had only 19 carries and one catch his sophomore season.
He said he is in position to contribute to the team and feels his skill set is what the Rhule staff recruits.
Johnson: “To play football you’ve got to be fast, strong and competitive. I’d say I’m those things. I’d definitely say I’m the kind of guy they like to recruit and probably even faster than me, who knows. I’d definitely say I’m the right guy and guys like myself are right for the system.”
Johnson acknowledged why coaches recruit speed.
Johnson: “You can’t teach speed and you can’t beat speed. I’ll just keep it like that, honestly.”
Johnson said winter conditioning has let him enter spring faster, stronger and wiser.
