Auburn upsets No. 1 Wahoo, advances to fifth consecutive semifinal

LINCOLN, Neb. - Stop if you've heard this before but the Auburn Bulldogs are once again heading to the semifinals of the boys state basketball tournament.
The Bulldogs (20-6) controlled the tempo and pace of the game, trailing only once in a 47-44 upset win over top-seeded Wahoo in the opening game of the Class C-1 state tournament at the Devaney Center Wednesday.
Leading 30-27 with 6:38 left in the game, senior forward Carson Leslie blocked a shot on one end and ran the floor the other way securing a layup forcing a Wahoo timeout while giving Auburn a five-point lead.
The Warriors (24-2) stormed back to tie the game at 32 after an Owen Hancock three-ball and a Marcus Glock lay in. But sophomore Nixon Ligouri--after struggling for three quarters--stepped in to splash home a 3-pointer to put the eighth-seeded Bulldogs up 35-32.
The teams traded baskets and free throws down the stretch and with under 10 seconds to go, Auburn led 46-42. Glock dribbled up the right side of the floor and stepped into what was thought to be a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one.
But during a timeout, officials said Glock had a toe on the line, changing the call to a two. From there Ligouri went to the line to ice the game, hitting one of two as Auburn snapped Wahoo's 20-game winning streak.
Leslie and Maverick Binder paced Auburn with 13 points a piece while Ligouri hit five of six free throws in the fourth to finish with 10 points and seal the upset win.
Glock scored 16 points on 7-13 shooting from the field.
It's the second straight year Wahoo has fallen to an eight seed in the opening round.
Box Score:
