OMAHA, Neb. -- The name of the Target shooter that was killed in Omaha has been released along with more details.

The Omaha Police Department said the shooter was 32-year-old Joseph Jones, of Omaha. His next of kin has already been notified.

Officers said Jones bought the rifle that he used from Cabela's four days earlier than the incident.

According to authorities, the officer that was involved in the incident was Officer Brian Vanderheiden. Vanderheiden has worked for OPD for 20 years and is currently on paid administrative leave by OPD.

Officials said officers were dispatched to Target, 17810 W Center Road, on Tuesday around noon after reports of shots being fired. They reportedly received at least 29 911 calls during the incident. Multiple officers and law enforcement personnel from various county, state and federal agencies showed up.

OPD said officers and a Nebraska State Patrol trooper went into the store and found Jones with the rifle. They reportedly told Jones to put down the rifle. Vanderheiden reportedly fired his handgun and hit Jones, killing him.

According to authorities, Jones had fired off several shots inside of Target. He reportedly had an AR-15 style rifle and 13 loaded rifle magazines. There were no injuries reported but bullet casings were found inside.

The investigation is ongoing and any additional information will be released by the OPD Public Information Office as it becomes available.
