GALENA, Kan. – Kansas officials are reporting the death of a Falls City man following a police chase.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it has opened an investigation into an officer-involved shooting on Monday in Cherokee County, about 300 miles from Falls City.
The incident started when a woman called 911 in Gelena, Kan., to report a man being held at gunpoint by another. The armed man left in Ford F-250 flatbed truck.
Deputies say the pickup was driven by Phillip Doerr, 28.
Officials say Doerr exited the truck and fired a handgun at deputies. Multiple rounds were fired at law enforcement and a patrol vehicle was hit.
The Bureau of Investigation says deputies returned fire and Doerr ran into a tree line.
Deputies reported hearing a single shot about five minutes later, around 5:40 p.m.
At 8 p.m. officials found Doerr who had died from a gunshot wound to the head.
