TECUMSEH, Neb. -- Nebraska authorities are investigating after an inmate allegedly assaulted several staff members at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.

According to NDCS officials, the incident happened Monday, with one staff member receiving a serious injury. NDCS chief of staff Laura Strimple said the staff member required treatment at a local hospital.

Strimple said that an inmate was aggressive and began swearing at a staff member, eventually punching the staff member in the face. A second staff person who arrived to assist also reportedly took a hit to the face. A third staff person was also struck in the head, resulting in an injury that required medical attention, according to NDCS accounts.

Upon being restrained, the inmate allegedly spit on a fourth staff person, while being escorted out of the area.

An investigation of the incident has been launched. Findings will be provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The NDCS disciplinary process will be utilized with sanctions, such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations, Strimple said.
