OMAHA, Neb. -- During the holidays, officials in Omaha are reminding the public that discharging a firearm within city limits is not only illegal, but potentially deadly.

The Omaha Police department said that celebratory gunfire continues to be a problem in many cities, during the holiday season in particular, leading to tragic results where innocent people are hit by bullets, either getting injured or killed.

OPD said that any bullet discharge from a gun, even into the sky, has to land somewhere and there are significant risks for injury or death.

In a press release, OPD and the City of Omaha said they are committed to its policy of zero tolerance of illegal gun use and its initiative to combat gun violence in the community.

OPD said discharging firearms within city limits is illegal and violators will be arrested.

Officials also offered a reminder about the city's fireworks ordinance, noting that consumer fireworks may be discharged in Omaha from 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 through 1 a.m. on Jan 1.

Those possessing, using, discharging consumer fireworks must be 16 years or old. OPD added that minors 12-15 years old are allowed to discharge consumer fireworks under the direct supervision of an adult who is 19 years old or older.

OPD said anyone found in violation of this ordinance risks being cited for a criminal violation.
