Syracuse allocates for disc golf

Eagle scout would organize construction of six-station course in Williams Park, keno funds allocated

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse City Council approved construction of a disc golf course at Williams Park.

Nathaniel Cordray proposed the project for his Eagle scout badge. He will work with Zeb Kreifels of Syracuse to construct six bases and three baskets.

The city allocated $2,800 for the bases. Cordray is approaching two other Syracuse organizations for the cost of the baskets.

In other action, Sheriff Colin Caudill presented his monthly breakdown of hours and incidents.

Mayor Deb Dettmer inquired about a new item not seen in previous reports.. K-9 deployment is a new line item due to the uptick of vehicle searches with suspicious activity.

Mayor Dettmer also asked if the sheriff’s office is at full staff. Caudill said they are still two deputies short, but said he is grateful to be in better staffing situation than many other communities.

Marcella Ament, 304 Swanson Dr., spoke to the city council regarding the water flow in her neighborhood. Councilman Jerry Werner said a drainage tube at this particular area is on the 2023 budget. Werner stressed that just because it's in next year's budget does not mean it will be approved.

Joe Johnson gave a presentation on TIF funds. Syracuse has done the paperwork declaring parts of the city blighted. Johnson said it’s better to be proactive, having the infrastructure in place so developers can come in ready to build. Using TIF funds can help in these areas.

 The sixth  annual Halloween parade for Pre-K - 5th grade students and teachers will spook Main street from   2 to  2:45 p.m. on October 31. Trick or treating  participating businesses.

The Parks and Rec Department has organized a movie night in Williams park. Movies begin at 7 p.m.

City council voted to adopt a Resolution to approve the engagement with Andrew Willis of Cline Williams Law and provide legal services related to general redevelopment services.
