Sweet 16: Sidney handles Fremont-Mills once again on senior night
SIDNEY, Iowa - There were flowers, pictures and even miniature volleyballs inside the gym at Sidney High School Tuesday night.
And perhaps even a few tears as the Cowgirls honored their six seniors prior to Tuesday's match with Fremont-Mills. All of the emotions didn't overwhelm Sidney as it defeated Fremont-Mills for the fourth time this year and 16 straight time overall, 25-11, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18.
The Knight's (6-23) still lead the all-time series 19-18, winning 15 in a row over the Cowgirls from Sept. 26, 2009, to Oct. 28, 2014. But it's been all Sidney over the last seven years and again on Tuesday night.
After a dominant, quick victory in the opening set, the Cowgirls fell in set two after the Knight's came out more aggressive and attacked more efficiently. Sidney (27-5) mishandled a few receptions on serves allowing Fremont-Mills to hang around before taking the lead late and holding on for the win 25-21 to even the match.
The third set went back-and-forth with no team leading by more than three at any point. Sidney took control, though, late in the set behind the powerful swings of Kaden Payne (19 kills) and Addy Haning (13 kills) to pull away 25-19.
It was more of the same in the fourth set, with the Knight's keeping it close early, but a key Sidney run in the middle of the set to go up 18-14 prompted two timeouts from Knight's coach Taylor Sudmann. Fremont-Mills would never get any closer as the Corner Conference champions closed out the match 25-18.
Senior libero Emily Hutt was fantastic defensively for the Cowgirls with 15 digs and served well throughout the match. Avery Dowling added 44 assists from her setter position as Sidney started all six seniors.
Junior Eve Brumbaugh also recorded dig No. 500 for her career.
Sophomore Bella Gute is going to be a phenomenal player from her libero position going forward for Fremont-Mills. She had 15 digs and too many diving efforts and hustle plays to count. Carlie Chambers and Teegan Ewalt each had 10 kills.
Box Score:
Fremont-Mills (6-23): 11, 25, 19, 18 - 1
Sidney (27-5): 25, 21, 25, 25 - 3
