Bennington Public Schools approves land purchase, calls for $153 million bond

BENNINGTON, Neb. -- An eastern Nebraska school district is giving the go-ahead to a major purchase of land for a new school and is calling for a nine-figure bond to pay for it.
The Bennington Public School Board voted unanimously Monday to purchase a 76-acre location southwest of the current high school.
Another unanimous vote called for $153 million-plus bond issue to pay for it. The voters would have the final say on that matter this coming November.
The move came after surveys, phone calls, and public hearings were done to discuss the issues facing the growing part of Douglas County.
The district has been outlining for months the need for a second high school in their district.
District officials said long-term projections show district enrollment could grow by as much as 300 percent in the coming decade.
