The first year teachers also received a $250 gift card to help set up their classrooms for the upcoming school year and a copy of a book Kade’s mother, Deb, gave him.

Kade was a 2016 graduate of Auburn High School. He was killed in a hunting accident last year. At the time of his death in 2021, he was employed as a second grade teacher at Palmyra, where he was an assistant football coach and middle school basketball coach.

Deb Reiman says Bennett, Weeping Water and Elmwood-Murdock did not have any first-year teachers this year, so the scholarships were awarded to friends of Kade's from area districts.

The book they received was "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein.

Deb Reiman said she gave the book to her son on his last day of student teaching.

Reiman: "I shared the words with each of them that I shared with Kade in hopes that they will carry a piece of us with them. Remembering always what is most important, relationships."
