Mayor recognizes track champion, new officer
NEBRASKA CITY – Mayor Bryan Bequette recognized a Nebraska City track champion and administered the oath of office for a new police officer at Tuesday’s meeting.
Beau Lee won two gold medals at the Class C high school state track meet and set Lourdes Central Catholic jumping records.
Coach Jim Thurman said Lee is an outstanding student and athlete.
Thurman said Lee is self-motivated and aware of how to improve his jumps, which helped him at district and state competition. He said despite disappointing jumps in the preliminary triple jumps at state, Lee made good changes and set a new school record and his personal best.
Mayor Bryan Bequette also administered the oath of office for new police officer McKenna Ahrens.
The Nebraska City Civil Service Commission recommended the hiring of McKenna Ahrens.
She is a graduate of Pleasanton High School and earned her degree at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Ahrens previously worked as a case manager for Saint Francis Ministries in Omaha and the state Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center at Kearney.
She is scheduled in August as the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.
Nebraska City police have not been at full staff for nearly a year. With the hiring of Ahrens, the department has one full-time position remaining open.
